Case 240

2. Application to Waifs and Strays' Society for E. 29 June 1883

View the Case Summary.

Mrs. - the mother of these children is I think a deserving woman. Being one at laundry all day, the children run the streets, play truant &c, &c and it is most important they should be under control & properly brought up & keep out of the streets. Their mother is willing, if the Guardians will allow it, that the 7/6 she now receives from the board should be paid to whoever takes the children in charge. This may possibly be allowed, with pressure, but the Guardian I think dont much like doing it. As they prefer to get the children off their hands altogether in [?] or other orphanages that will take them in without payment.

But, I got them to promise the other day to allow 3/- per one of those children, if I could get her into an orphanage, where the annual payment is 5/-
