Case 3695

6. Letter from Miss Faulkner 27 March 1898

View the Case Summary.

£1 quarterly the balance of her wages being paid to her we usually ask the elder girls on going out whether they like the arrangement & invariably the reply has been that they would like to start with a good outfit and will send the money to pay for it. Miss G. alludes in her letter to having hired A. for a year no such arrangement was made with me but I think Miss G. may probably mean the hope that she would keep A. for at least a year. When Miss G. came to me I handed her one of our printed rules respecting girls going to service in which it states "after a month's trial one month's notice on either side" A. was engaged from the 24th of June 1897 at £7 a year.

I know Miss J. very well and shall probably see her next Tuesday. Should she think it advisable I would see A. and try and induce her to remain in the good home she has for her year at any rate.

Yrs. very truly
Louisa M. Faulkner
I return Mrs. Clayton's & Miss G. letters
