R. was born with only one arm. She lived with her father who was a retired Royal Arsenal marine. Her mother had run off with a young man. R's behaviour was becoming wild, and her father was keen to have her put into a home for training. She went to Fareham Industrial Home in Hampshire in December 1887, but was removed from the home by her father in January 1888.
