H's mother ran off with another man in 1879, following an incident in which she and the man had been charged with drunkenness and indecency. H. lived with her father who was a wire worker. As he was nearly blind, H. went into the Dulwich Home. H's mother was considered to be immoral and her father was concerned that she should not see the children while they were in the Home.
