Case 3583

Case number: 3583
Application year: 1893
Name:

R (A)

Gender:

Female

Year of birth: 1886
Home: Foster Care

Description:

A's father was an acrobat and musical hall singer. He was working in Glasgow with Hengler's Circus when his wife died in Bristol in 1891, following childbirth. Most of the children were boarded out in Bristol. Although he was a caring father he had to travel all over Britain to find work. He did not earn very much. A. was boarded out at Wraxall near Bristol, but the woman who was caring for her tried to abandon her. A. was taken into the care of the Waifs and Strays' Society and was fostered by another family in Wraxall in March 1893. When she was 15, in 1900, the Society was no longer willing to contribute to her support, as it was short of funds. There were suggestions that she become a pupil-teacher, or that she should go to one of the Society's laundry homes to earn her keep. However, it seems that she was kept on by her foster parents.
