Saints Peter and Paul Home for Babies, Catford

Catford, London

(1939 - 1947)

This building in Catford replaced the Home of St Peter and Paul Home for Babies in Balham, which had been found to be unsuitable. The nursery moved to the new accommodation in January 1939.

In the same year a small military hospital was set up on 23 August and briefly shared the building with the nursery. In September 1939 two buses evacuated the residents to Treeman's Nursery in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. All the children were seated on the bottom decks and mattresses were piled on the top decks in case of enemy action. t the time the nursery had 32 children, 15 of them bottle fed. They were later evacuated to Lambourn, Berkshire.

In 1947 the building at Catford was opened as the Princess Helena Victoria Nursery Training College, Catford.
