In no sense should children be kept to themselves  - here the Society cuts against the old Victorian ethos that 'children should be seen but not heard'. Great and grand public occasions, like the State Opening of Parliament were exciting opportunities for the children to learn more about the wider world. In this instance, a chance to see the King and Queen would also have been a great honour.
