If consent to our retaining the child, could be gained without the arrangement, we should infinitely prefer it, but we could of course shut our eyes to the fact that F. (as we cannot for a moment doubt) has real affection for the child it is a hard condition to make thus he should not have an opportunity of seeing how she fares as the years go by. There is perhaps the danger that upon any of the occasions that it would be arranged for him to see her in the future the desire to have her at his house might assert itself and cause trouble and disappointment again, whereas if the matter could be settled definitely & unconditionally now the possibility would be removed.
