Case 226. Letter from J. 6 October 1929View the Case Summary.
I may honestly say I've been the despair of doctors from 5 years of age, when becoming an inmate of St. Thomas's Hospital, London, for over 2 years, and then for 12 months at the National Orthopaedic, after injuring the spine. Three doctors, within a year, at Oxford bid me flee for my life! - One of whom graciously stated my earthly career would terminate within three months if continuing in the damp atmosphere of the University City! So the Clarendon Press had to do the best it could without the "Waif"! Again, as recently as only a few years back, Drs. Harris (deceased) & Longton (here in Frome - doctors to the home) emphasized the same gloomy facts! Dr. Harris once said: "Mr. Smith, since you visited us last Dr. Longton & I have discussed you for some length." "What was the result of the inquest, doctor?" "That you are a 'mystery man' - you should have been in your grave years ago, or in an asylum!" "But God is good," I humbly stated, "His grace and strength never fail. I know my weakness, & I know He knows! 'When I am weak, then am I strong!'" Thus is our Heavenly Father glorified - even by one of you own "Waifs" - a cripple! Yours faithfully, J.
