1. Application to the Waifs and Strays' Society 17 June 1902

Gloucester Road
S. Kensington

Dear Sir,
I am making this application on behalf of E as the one chance of keeping her respectable - when her mother is at work the child is left entirely to her own devices, or to the chance care of a neighbour [?] about the streets alone or with her youngest brother, a very undesirable companion. Mrs. [?] is a very poor hard working woman, who has had the greatest difficulty to keep a house for her children since her husband was taken to Hanwell 9 years ago. The sons are not able to help their mother - the youngest one has a weak intellect & is unable to remain in any situation for any length of time. Mrs. [?] lost a good deal of money through a drunken lodger who did not pay his rent for weeks. She was in consequence obliged to move into her present rooms, where they are all much too closely packed together, but for which she has to pay her rent. She is quite unable to contribute anything towards the child's maintenance & I cannot see any means of raising funds for the purpose. I, myself will gladly subscribe £1.1 per ann. for the purpose but an sorry it is impossible to do more. I greatly hope the committee will be able to place the child in one of their Homes - it is a most deserving care - one [?] calling for help to save her from the streets. The only other refuge open to her is the Convent of Assumption, Kensington Square, where she might possible by taken in, if everything else fails.
I am yours faithfully
Miss J
