Our acquaintance with this family of 6 children by an in Oct. 1900 when the Woolwich Treasured in the Soldiers & Sailors Families [?] wrote & asked us if 6 children could be boarded out in village. The father being in S. Africa & the mother having died two months before having a baby then in Oct. not then 5 months old. The grandparent's had them but the grandmother found she was too old & [?] they would be boarded out they must go to the Union. Accordingly 3 cottages were found into which the children were taken in two's. The S. & S.F.A. [?] 20/- per week for the 6 & a clothing [?] of 5/- per week. The father's parents were very good people very kind in making of giving clothing so [?] little [?] little of the clothes [?] was [?] except on [?]. The father's [?] in June [?] his discharge in July he came to the village & did a little hay making. The S. & S.F.A. continued their allowance, until the end of July, but he had not found work & went off he said to London - after promising to send 10/- a week he gave us £2.10 to go on with and from that time the children have been living on the money saved from the clothes. £10. had been returned to S. & S.F.H. [?] before as [?] in want of funds, but an application the other day. The Treasurer was good enough to sent it back to us. We are very hopeful of getting the eldest girl into a training House in Kent as a pre- [?] but one has to have a [?] expensive outfit some of which has been given by a lady. The eldest boy is boarded & lodged by the Rev [?] will leave 4 unprovided for. The [?] get into the Soldier [?] Home in May 1903, but meanwhile they have to be kept & so it [?] perhaps [?] The mother we were told [?] her children [?] was [?]
