Case 9621

1. Application to Waifs and Strays' Society 30 March 1903

View the Case Summary.

The mother a great drunkard, in consequence husband left her about four years ago & although there was no separation [?] 6/6 per week towards her & the child's keep, she having the custody. On the 16 Sep. 1902 owing to the mother's drunken condition I found the child sadly neglected, the child & mother were living in one empty room at a Union place, Ln. Broughton & sleeping on a sack which was filled with rotten straw. I communicated with the father & with his consent removed the child to Mrs. Ramsay's Home, Crumpsall, where it now is & the father since its removal there has paid regularly through N.S.P.C.C. 20/- per month. Shortly afterwards the mother was taken to a Home by Mrs. Ferands, Police Court Missionary but took her discharge about a month ago & since she has been in lodgings & has fallen back to her drunken habits worse than before. The father is sober & hard working, is in lodgings with his parents & prefers the child to be in a Home rather than where he is, his mother being an old lady & not fit to look after it. The child is in good health, bright & intelligent & its relations are very respectable.

Inspector N.S.P.C.C.
