M's birth parents both died of consumption [tuberculosis]. She was in the custody of her stepmother and her stepmother's new husband. The husband worked with a travelling steam circus. M. was left with some people who could no longer afford to keep her. M. went into St John's Home, Mildenhall in October 1895. M's maintenance was paid by the Society's branch in Witley, Surrey. She had annual holidays there between 1896 and 1899. Her godmother, Miss C., of Bury St Edmunds, also wanted M. to visit her. M. went into service with Miss C. in August 1899. |
