Description: |
E. was an orphan, his parents both died of tuberculosis, a year apart. He was accepted by the Waifs and Strays' Society and on 25 August 1885 was received into the Standon Farm Home for Boys, Staffordshire. In December 1886 he was transferred to St Oswald's College, Ellesmere, Shropshire. In autumn 1888 E. was ready to leave the school and much of the correspondence in the file concerns his employment prospects. In November 1889 it appears that he was working for Shanks and Co., Sanitary Engineers, as he was writing letters on their headed writing paper. |
