Description: |
J. was born in the Workhouse and remained there with his mother for several years, until about 1896. His father deserted his mother before he was born. J's mother had been working as a domestic servant to support herself and her son. This was not easy for her but she had been helped by "charitably disposed persons" and had managed to keep J. well dressed and cared for. J. was admitted to the Harvey Goodwin Home for Boys, Cambridge on 20 September 1901, his entry was slightly delayed by him fracturing his arm in an accident. J. remained in the Home until August 1905 when he was returned to his mother's care. She had remarried and was in a position to provide a comfortable home for her son. |
