Rose Cottage Home For Girls, Atherington

Umberleigh RSO, Atherington, Devon

(1901 - 1905)

We have little information about this Home as it was only open for four years and is rarely mentioned in the Society's Archive. We do know that it opened in 1901 as a small cottage home for seven girls, who were aged 5-12 years old. Cottage homes were usually quite small, rurally located, and only housed a few younger children. The girls who were cared for at Rose Cottage were probably local children. However it was not unusual for cottage homes to take children from the cities, which gave these children a fresh start in a new environment. The Revd WW Arthur acted as the Home's Honorary Secretary from Rose Cottage's opening, to its closure in 1905.
