Beatrix Babies Unit and Nurses Home, Handsworth

Handsworth, Birmingham

(1945 - c1974)

This building, which since 1939 had been in use as Calthorpe Home for Girls, re-opened in 1945 as Handsworth Nursery, having been adapted to accommodate babies and toddlers. In 1964 a new Babies Unit and Nurses Home was dedicated by the Bishop of Birmingham and was renamed the Beatrix Nursery, taking the name from the recently closed Beatrix Nursery in East Knoyle. In 1972 Beatrix Nursery and Day Nursery was set up as a subsidiary to the residential Beatrix Babies Unit and Nurses Home. The residential nursery closed sometime during the 1970s.
