Case 3737

Case number: 3737
Application year: 1893
Name:

E

Gender:

Female

Year of birth: 1885
Home: Hillingdon Heath Home For Girls

Description:

E's mother died of "morbis cordis" [heart disease] in 1892. Not long after this the Society for the Prevention for Cruelty to Children was involved with the family. E's father was twice convicted of cruelty. He was a law-writer who suffered from writer's cramp. He could no longer work and the family was about to be evicted from their home. E. went to the Hays House Home in Hillingdon Heath in June 1893. In 1898 she was boarded out with a woman in Hillingdon. E. was baptised on 2 July 1893, with Mrs Fenton, the local Waifs and Strays Committee Secretary, becoming her godmother. When E. was almost 15 in 1900, the Society was keen to get her into service as it was over £5000 in deficit and could not afford to continue paying for her keep.
