E's father died of inflammation of the lungs in January 1888, aged 24. Her mother and the mother's family, some of whom were rumoured to be jewellery thieves, were considered a "bad lot". E's father's family wanted her to be cared for by the Waifs and Strays' Society. E. was fostered out to several homes, and in April 1898 went to St Hilda's Home in Marylebone. In 1902 she went into service on the Isle of Wight. |
