There is virtually no information about E's background on file. Her mother signed the agreement for her to go into the Society's care when she was about eight. E. was boarded out at Slinford, Sussex in 1883. In 1890 she went to live in St Chad's Home, Far Headingley. She went into service in May 1894 but returned to the home the following January. In April 1896 she went to work as a machine knitter in Wales. She later worked in a hosiery factory in Leicester. In 1931, when she was 56, the factory closed and she was short of work. Assistance for her was sought by placing a notice in Our Waifs and Strays magazine. 'Our Girls' Friendship League', a support group for the Society's old girls, and others, gave some money. There is a photograph of E. in the file. |
